Anna Mach

Anna Mach (she/her/hers) is violist and music educator at the University of Denver Lamont School of Music, where she is pursuing a master’s in viola performance with Basil Vendryes. She recently completed her bachelor’s in viola performance with honors at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music with Steve Wyrczynski. A firm believer in decolonizing classical music and making music education accessible to everyone, she is currently on the board of the Orchestra is Racist Task Force, working to quantify systemic inequities in the orchestral field. In addition, she is a member the Jacob’s School of Music Diversity and Equity Task Force, aiming to diversify the curriculum and performance opportunities at Jacobs. Because of her work on the Task Force, she was a panelist for the Jacobs School Community Conversations this past summer, in which she presented ideas on “ways to approach injustices through art.” Anna is also the content researcher for ARTivism: Arts For A Cause, an online concert series that donates money to charitable organizations. This fall, she will serve as a viola instructor for Through the Staff, an online lesson platform for students whose music education was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. During the 2019-2020 school year, Anna was a senior class representative of Indiana University Dean’s Advisory Council for Diversity and Inclusion, a violin helper at Fairview Elementary in Bloomington, IN, and a student assistant at Indiana University’s Asian Culture Center. As a performer, Anna was a section violist in the Jacobs Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as a substitute violist for the Owensboro Symphony, Evansville Philharmonic, and Columbus Indiana Philharmonic. As an active chamber musician, Anna studied and performed with Jaroslav Lis, assistant principal second violin of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, and worked members of the Pacifica Quartet including Mark Holloway and Guy Ben-Ziony. She has performed in masterclasses for renowned violists including Carol Rodland, Karen Ritscher, Roland Glassl, Jeffrey Irvine, Lynne Ramsey, Daphne Gerling, among others. In the summer of 2019, Anna was a full-scholarship recipient for Music Academy International in Trentino, Italy, where she served as rotating principal violist and soloist for J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto no. 6. Other festival appearances include the Karen Tuttle Workshop, Indiana University Summer Philharmonic, the Castleman Quartet Program, and Terry King and Laura Bossert’s LyricaFest. Passionate about contemporary music, Anna recently the Divergent Virtual Workshop with the Longy School of Music, where she will premiere pieces by three composers and collaborate with composer Eve Beglarian. Next summer, she will attend the Montreal Contemporary Music Lab. In the summer of 2019, she studied Theory and Analysis of Contemporary Music in Paris, France through a partnership with the Eastman School of Music and IRCAM (Institute for Research and Coordination of Acoustics/Music). She also collaborated with Grammy-award winning composer Vince Mendoza and performed in the 2019 Midwest Composers Symposium. Additionally, she has premiered dozens of works by Jacobs School of Music students.
